AVONDALE — It was a busy evening for Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy athletics as several teams were in action on Tuesday.
The varsity girls soccer team earned a 9-0 mercy rule victory over Cherryville. Selma McMurry led the charge with three goals, while Margaret Schweppe added two goals of her own. Kaitlyn Rowe, Lily Wall, Madison McComas and Lindsey Cole accounted for one goal each.
The middle school tennis team defeated Shelby 9-0. Abby Crawford (8-0), August Cook (7-7 (7-2)), Charlie Sutton (8-2), Max Sutton (8-0), Jack Hamrick (8-4) and Emma Hamrick (8-0) were all victorious in singles play. Crawford and Max Sutton won their doubles match 8-0, while Charlie Sutton and Jack Hamrick defeated their doubles opponent 8-1. Emma Hamrick and Laney Short won their doubles match 8-1 as well. Sam Sutton, Lillian McMurray and Addison Milner all won multiple matches as well.
The middle school baseball team continued to make strides in yesterday’s game against R-S Middle. Landry Ohmstead pitched 2.1 innings, striking out four batters. Alton Freeman garnered one strikeout in his one inning of work, while Tate Black made his first pitching appearance of the season. In addition to his work on the mound, Ohmstead went 1-2 from the plate.
The middle school girls soccer team extended their winning streak to four games behind a 4-0 victory over R-S Middle. Sophia Bell scored two goals, while Ella Duncan and Emmeline McComas each scored a goal to account for the 4-0 final.
The varsity boys tennis team picked up a 9-0 victory over Cherryville. Aidan O’Reilly (8-0), Lukas Hobbs (8-0), Hunter Plaster (9-7), James Hamrick (8-2), Turner Cook (8-0) and Tanner Richards (8-0) all picked up victories in singles play. Aidan O’Reilly and Hobbs teamed up for an 8-0 doubles victory. Harrison Newton and Cook won their doubles match by an 8-4 score, while Nathan Jiang and Reynolds Chadwick won 8-3.
