TJCA earns first-ever girls soccer conference championship with 9-0 win

 

AVONDALE — The Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy (TJCA) girls soccer team earned a share of 

the 1A/2A Southern Piedmont Conference Championship on Tuesday night with a 9-0 win over Bessemer City. 

The conference title is the first for the TJCA girls soccer program. The Lady Gryphons finished the regular season with a 12-2-1 record overall and an 11-1 mark in conference play. In the 9-0 win over Bessemer City on Tuesday

Margaret Schweppe and Kaitlyn Rowe both garnered hat tricks, while Selma McMurry put two shots in the back of the net. Sophie Smart also scored a goal to account for the 9-0 final. Emily Short preserved a clean sheet in the win. 

To win our first ever conference championship means the world to me and our program,” said TJCA head coach Brian Espinoza. “ I am extremely proud of this team and very thankful for all the former players who helped paved the way for this championship. Champions are made of hard work and for many years, that's what we did. Today, I am one of the happiest men alive.

The Lady Gryphons will now wait to find out their playoff seeding, which will be released on Friday.
